Howdy, fellow wanderlusters!
Let’s be real: When you think “bucket list adventure,” Amarillo, TX, might not be the first name that rustles up in your mind. That’s exactly why it’s such a hidden gem. Recently, I traded city chaos for wide open skies, spicy Tex-Mex, and some of the friendliest folks you’ll ever meet in Amarillo—and I’m here to spill the beans (and maybe some queso) on how this West Texas city is so much more than a quick pit stop on Route 66.
The first thing you notice about Amarillo? The sky. It’s massive, stretching so far you’ll wonder if you’ve reached the edge of the world. The next sensation is the warm wind, sweeping up scents of barbecue, wild sage, and that faint ozone before a Texas thunderstorm.
In Amarillo, history and kitsch ride side by side. I found myself swapping cowboy tales with a local over black coffee, then snapping neon-lit selfies at the quirky Cadillac Ranch. There’s a certain humility here; you don’t just pass through Amarillo, you let it work its magic on you—one day, one sunset at a time.
If you only have a weekend (but trust me, you’ll want more), here’s my crash course:
1. Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Did you know the second largest canyon in the U.S. is just 25 miles from downtown Amarillo? Hiking the Lighthouse Trail at sunrise is nothing short of spiritual: crimson cliffs, aromatic juniper trees, and the distant cry of a Harris’s hawk—wild Texas, unfiltered. Pro tip: start early and pack plenty of water. The sun isn’t shy here!
2. Cadillac Ranch
Ten graffiti-blasted Cadillacs, nose-down in a field—a surreal salute to Route 66’s golden age. Bring your own spray paint (or grab a can from a local store) to leave your mark. It’s communal, messy, and utterly delightful. My jeans are still a little paint-spattered.
3. The Historic Sixth Street District (Route 66)
This stretch is nostalgic Americana at its best—antique shops, art galleries, and diners where time seems to have pressed pause. Grab some pecan pie at GoldenLight Café and soak in the legacy; the stories linger in the clink of glasses and the laughter of locals.
4. American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum
Even if you don’t know a bridle from a buzzer, this museum offers a fascinating look at cowboy culture and the animals who helped build the West.
5. Amarillo Botanical Gardens
A lush oasis that’s a stark—and beautiful—contrast to the surrounding plains. Grab an iced tea from the gift shop and take a slow stroll. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of their music nights or seasonal festivals.
Food here is a celebration—big flavors, hearty portions, and genuine warmth. A few standouts from my trip:
If you love coffee, Paramount Café downtown brews a cup as bold as the city itself—ideal for a slow morning or a midday pick-me-up.
Don’t write off Amarillo after sunset! Step into Hoots Pub for local live music, or try line dancing at a honky-tonk (boots are optional but encouraged). The city hosts frequent rodeos and summer concerts. I lucked into “Amarillo by Morning,” their annual summer festival—there were food trucks, craft vendors, and an evening sky filled with music and laughter.
If you want to cap the night on an artsy note, catch a production at the Amarillo Little Theatre. The talent here seriously punches above its weight.
Picking the right home base can make all the difference, and Amarillo’s hotel scene surprised me—in the very best way. Here are my favorites, and you can book them all hassle-free with Rooms and Suite:

Red Roof Inn Amarillo West
If you’re prioritizing budget but not willing to sacrifice comfort, this inn’s fridge-and-microwave-equipped rooms and proximity to Westgate Mall had me sold.
Drury Inn & Suites Amarillo
My personal pick—with a lavish indoor pool, evening food and drinks, and a complimentary breakfast to fuel canyon hikes. Unbeatable value, especially for longer stays.
I came for the cowboy kitsch and canyon views. I found a city full of creative energy, untold stories, and fresh twists on Texas hospitality—with a dash of grit and a whole lot of heart. Amarillo reminded me that adventure is less about crossing oceans, more about opening your eyes wherever your boots land.
My only regret? Not staying an extra day under those endless Texas skies.
Thinking of wandering West? Amarillo might just surprise you—book your perfect stay on Rooms and Suite and let the adventure begin. Happy trails, y’all!
